Description

Agnihotri et al used measurements of hand length and breadth to predict height. This can be helpful to estimate height of a victim when other sources of information are limited. The authors are from SSR Medical College and University of Mauritius in Mauritius.

Subjects: healthy young adults from 18 to 30 years from Mauritius

Parameters:

(1) gender

(2) length of the left hand in cm (from tip of middle finger to distal crease of the wrist joint)

(3) breadth of the right hand in cm (from the most laterally placed point on the head of the second metatarsal to the most medially placed point on the head of the fifth metatarsal).

For males:

stature in cm =

= (4.187 * (length of left hand)) + 94.835

= (3.365 * (length of left hand)) + (3.711 * (breadth of right hand)) + 78.992

= EXP(0.024 * (length of left hand)) + 110.120

For females:

stature in cm =

= (4.945 * (length of left hand)) + 74.404

= (4.031 * (length of left hand)) + (3.177 * (breadth of right hand)) + 66.366

= EXP(0.031 * (length of left hand)) + 93.876

When these equations are used with patient date, the final equations in each group gave values much lower then appropriate. These gave appropriate results if addition was replaced by multiplication.

stature for a male in cm =

= EXP(0.024 * (length of left hand)) * 110.120

stature for a female in cm =

= EXP(0.031 * (length of left hand)) * 93.876
