Description

Walsworth et al derived an equation for predicting the 10 repetition maximum (10 RM) weight to use for short-arc quadriceps exercises. This method relies on a hand-held dynamometer to measure muscle strength. The authors are from multiple Army hospitals in Texas.

10 RM = weight in kilograms that an individual can lift 10 times correctly through a full range of motion

Patient selection: 22-53 years of age, both males and females

Parameters:

(1) age in years

(2) force in Newtons recorded on the hand-held dynamometer (HHD)

(3) body weight in kilograms

(4) gender of the patient (0 points if male; 1 point if female)

predicted 10 RM in kilograms =

= 9.04 - (0.12 * (age in years)) + (0.037 * (HHD)) + (0.082 * (body weight)) - (3.17 * (points for gender))
