Description

Schwartz et al developed an equation for estimating the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) for a child with chronic kidney disease. This was derived from data collected in the Chronic Kidney Disease in Children (CKiD) cohort. The authors are from the University of Rochester, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University, the Children's Hospital of San Diego and Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.

Patient selection: ages from 1 to 16 years with chronic kidney disease

Parameters:

(1) height in meters

(2) serum creatinine in mg/dL

(3) serum cystatin C in mg/L

(4) serum BUN in mg/dL

(5) gender

estimated GFR in mL per min per 1.73 square meter BSA =

= 39.1 * A * B * C * D * E

where:

A =

= ((height in meters) / (serum creatinine))^(0.516)

B =

= (1.8 / (cystatin C))^(0.294)

C =

= (30 / (BUN))^(0.169)

D =

= 1.099^(1 if male, 0 if female)

E =

= ((height in meters) / 1.4)^(0.188)
