Moise developed an equation for calculating the volume of a platelet concentrate to infuse into a fetus with thrombocytopenia. The author is from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.
Parameters:
(1) estimated fetoplacental blood volume in mL for the fetus
(2) initial platelet count for the fetus
(3) target platelet count for the fetus
(4) platelet count for the donor platelet concentrate
volume of platelet concentrate to infuse in mL =
= (fetoplacental blood volume in mL) * ((target platelet count for fetus) - (initial platelet count for fetus)) / (platelet count of the donor concentrate)
The choice of the platelet donor depends on the cause of the thrombocytopenia. For platelet allommunization it may be the mother or a donor lacking the target platelet antigen.
