Description

Marquis et al developed an equation to estimate the cross-sectional muscle area of an adult based on the patient’s age, gender and anthropomorphic measurements. The authors are from the University of Laval in Quebec.

Parameters:

(1) gender (male = 1, female = 0)

(2) circumference of the mid-thigh in centimeters

(3) quadriceps skinfold thickness in millimeters

estimated mid thigh muscle cross-sectional area in square cm =

= (16 * (points for gender)) – (63 * (mid thigh circumference)) – (2.2 * (quadriceps skinfold thickness)) + (79 * ((circumference) / (skinfold thickness))) + (1.48 * ((circumference)^2)) – (0.01 * ((circumference)^3)) + 905
