Description

Kim et al developed an equation for predicting skeletal muscle in an adult based on a dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) measurement of appendicular lean soft tissue. The authors are from St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital, Columbia University and the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque.

Subjects: healthy adults

Methods: DEXA scans

Parameters:

(1) appendicular lean soft tissue in kilograms

(2) age in years

(3) gender (1 if male, 0 if female)

total skeletal muscle mass in kilograms =

= (1.13 * (appendicular lean soft tissue kg)) - (0.02 * (age in years)) + (0.61 * (points for gender)) + 0.97

Performance:

• R-square 0.96 and SEE 1.58 kg.

• The patient's race did not impact the accuracy of the equation.
