Description

Jones et al developed an equation for predicting the body surface area of Caucasian adult females based on body weight and the circumference of the upper calf. The authors are from the University of Technology in Loughborough, England.

Patient population: 15 females 17 to 39 years of age

Parameters:

(1) body weight in kilograms

(2) circumference of upper calf in centimeters (measured with the patient standing in true anatomical position. The precise anatomic location is described in Weiner JS, Lourie JA. Practical human biology. 1981)

body surface area in square meters =

= (0.0071 * (body weight in kilograms)) + (0.0292 * (upper calf circumference in cm)) + 0.327

The authors felt that the same equation could be used for both men and women.
