Description

Burmeister reported equations for estimating lean body mass. The author is from the University of Saarland and Children's Hospital in Homburg-Saar.

Parameters:

(1) total body potassium content in mEq

(2) body surface area in square meters

(3) body weight in kilograms

lean body mass in kilograms =

= (0.0119 * (total body potassium)) + (6.04 * (body surface area))

where:

• The total body potassium reflects the body cell mass.

• The body surface area reflects extracellular fluid volume.

For a male:

total body potassium content in mEq =

= 39.2 * ((body weight in kilograms)^1.09)

If these equations are combined:

lean body mass in kilograms =

= (0.46648 * ((body weight)^1.09)) + (6.04 * (body surface area))
