Description

Babshet et al used the pulp to tooth area ratio in mandibular canines to estimate the age of human remains from India. This is based on the study of Cameriere et al. The authors are from the S.D.M. College of Dental Sciences and Hospital in Karnataka, India.

Subjects: adults of Indian origin from 20 to 70 years of age, both men and women

Specimen: mandibular canines

Analysis: Area of the entire tooth and area of the dental pulp in a peri-apical X-ray using computer-aded analysis.

ratio of pulp to tooth areas =

= (area of pulp in square cm) / (area of the entire tooth in square mm)

age in years =

= 64.413 - (195.265 * (ratio of the pulp to tooth areas))

Performance:

• 54% of estimates were less than +/- 10 years of the actual age ("acceptable").
