Description

Enterobius vermicularis can be very difficult to eliminate. Many affected patients are asymptomatic, and reinfection is very easy. Complete eradication may take a considerable effort over a long period of time.

Method of spread:

(1) carried by the fingers from the anus to mouth

(2) carried by the fingers from contaminated toys, furniture, or other objects to the mouth

(3) carried by the fingers from contaminated clothing (especially nightwear) to the mouth

(4) airborne dissemination of contaminated dust

(5) water-borne in swimming pools

Since several people are infected at one time, it is important to treat the entire group and to monitor everyone closely.

Control measures:

(1) good personal hygiene, especially washing hands after defecation and before putting the fingers in the mouth

(2) keeping the fingernails short and clean

(3) wearing closed pajamas that are changed and cleaned frequently

(4) changing bed linen daily, being careful not to shake the sheets

(5) heat treatment of metal items

(6) keep the bedroom clean and free of dust

(7) let direct sunlight or UV lamps shine into the rooms (kills the eggs)
