Description

A successful hand hygiene program depends on a variety of elements that operate throughout the entire healthcare organization.

Education:

(1) Orient new healthcare workers to hand hygiene practices.

(2) Provide ongoing reminders.

(3) Conduct annual updates with competency assessment.

(4) Identify role models who will encourage hand hygiene.

Engineering:

(1) Make sure hand care facilities are accessible and convenient.

(2) Place alcohol-based gel dispensing stations in moderate and high demand areas.

Product evaluation:

(1) Select the hand hygiene products that are effective and likely to be used, rather than just the cheapest.

(2) Survey healthcare workers for feedback about products.

Administrative:

(1) Develop written hand hygiene guidelines.

(2) Reduce understaffing and excessive workload, especially in critical care areas.

(3) Enforce guidelines for hand hygiene.

(4) Emphasize safety as a key component of the institutional culture.
