Fads come and go. They can be great fun while they last and an embarrassment when they are past.
Elements of a fad:
(1) Something (behavior, fashion, item, idea) is perceived as new, novel or desirable.
(2) It becomes immensely popular with a group of people, usually over a short period of time. At times it can be a mania (“craze”).
(3) Over a period of time it loses its popularity (“passing” of the fad). It may then be viewed negatively.
A fad can entail some hazard if it is not recognized for what it is. A large sum of money may be invested or a program started for something that later is no longer wanted.
