Description

Electric trains for rapid transit may be powered by a direct current running through a rail termed the third rail that runs parallel to the 2 main rails. Contact with the rail can result in electrocution and death.

The voltage involved is typically > 600 volts.

Persons at risk for electrocution:

(1) transit workers

(2) someone who is intoxicated with alcohol and/or drugs

(3) person wanting to commit suicide

(4) adolescents who are fooling around

(5) accidental fall, typically with ice or rain

A person may be electrocuted by:

(1) direct physical contact

(2) indirect contact through a piece of metal

(3) urinating on the third rail (which seems to appeal to someone who has drunk too much)
