Description

Wang et al developed the Early Blood Transfusion Needs Score (EBTNS) to help to identify a trauma patient who requires early transfusion. This may include transfusion during transport or soon after arrival to the trauma center. The authors are from John Peter Smith Health Network in Fort Worth, Texas.

Patient selection: trauma patient, with ages from 0 to > 70 years

Parameters:

(1) age in years

(2) type of injury

(3) heart rate in beats per minute

(4) systolic blood pressure in mm Hg

(5) Glasgow coma score (GCS)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: -4

• maximum score: 17

• The higher the score the greater the need for early transfusion.

• A score > 5 indicates a patient who should be considered for early blood transfusion.

Performance:

• The sensitivity is 82% and specificity 80%
