Description

Teawtrakul et al developed a score for identifying patients with non-transfusion-dependent thalassemia (NTDT) who are at risk for pulmonary hypertension. These patients may benefit from more aggressive management.

Patient selection: non-transfusion-dependent thalassemia (NTDT), northeastern Thailand

Outcome: pulmonary hypertension (risk defined as tricuspid regurgitation velocity > 2.9 m/s by echocardiography)

Parameters:

(1) age of the patient in years

(2) time since splenectomy

(3) type of thalassemia

= SUM(points for all 3 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maxium score: 7

• The higher the score the greater the risk for pulmonary hypertension.

• A score >= 4.5 (at least 2 risk factors) was associated

Performance:

• The area under the ROC curve was 0.88.
