Drugs are a leading cause of reversible cognitive decline. Review of medications is an important step in the evaluation of a patient who presents with unexplained cognitive impairment.


Medications which can cause cognitive impairment:

(1) aminophylline

(2) amiodarone

(3) antibiotics

(4) anticholinergic agents

(5) antihistamines

(6) antineoplastic agents

(7) barbiturates

(8) benzodiazepines or other sedative-hypnotic agents

(9) bromides

(10) bromocriptine

(11) cimetidine

(12) clonidine

(13) corticosteroids

(14) cytokine immunotherapy

(15) digoxin

(16) disulfiram

(17) diuretics (directly or through an effect on electrolytes)

(18) ergot

(19) ethosuximide

(20) glutethimide

(21) L-dopa

(22) lidocaine

(23) lithium

(24) meprobamate

(25) methyldopa

(26) metoclopramide

(27) narcotic analgesics (opioids)

(28) neuroleptics

(29) nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors

(30) nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDS)

(31) oral contraceptives

(32) pergolide

(33) phenytoin or other anticonvulsants

(34) procainamide

(35) propranolol

(36) quinidine

(37) selective-seritonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)

(38) statins

(39) stimulants

(40) tricyclic antidepressants
