Description

Some drugs can cause hoarseness (dysphonia). Sometimes this is transient and of minor significance but sometimes it can indicate that a serious problem is present.


 

Cause of Dysphonia

Drug

vocal cord hematoma

anticoagulant (warfarin/coumadin), thrombolytic agent, phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors, chemotherapy (thrombocytopenia)

chemical laryngitis

bisphosphonates

cough

angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors

dry mucosa

anticholinergics, antihistamines, diuretics

hormone-related change

testosterone, danocrine

laryngeal dystonia

antipsychotics (including atypicals)

mucosal irritation

inhaled steroids, inhaled drugs of abuse

infectious laryngitis

inhaled steroids, immunosuppressants, chemotherapy (neutropenia)
