Description

The apparent natural death of a married couple at about the same time may be referred to as the Philemon and Baucis syndrome, named for two mythologic lovers.

Features of the Philemon and Baucis syndrome:

(1) A couple is found dead.

(2) Usually this involves elderly adults.

(3) One appears to have died of natural causes.

(4) The second may show signs of sudden death.

Exclusions:

(1) double homicide

(2) homicide-suicide

(3) toxic gas release or poisoning

(4) cold or heat exposure

The theory is that the second adult suddenly comes upon the body of the spouse and the emotional shock causes sudden death.
