Imodium (loperamide hydrochloride. McNeil Consumer) can be used to help control of symptoms in adults and children with diarrhea. It acts by slowing intestinal motility.
Imodium products:
(1) Imodium A-D liquid (1 mg loperamide in 1 teaspoon)
(2) Imodium A-D caplets (2 mg loperamide per caplet)
(3) Imodium Advanced caplets (2 mg loperamide per caplet)
(4) Imodium Advanced Chewable tablets (2 mg loperamide per tablet)
Imodium Advanced is a mixture of loperamide HCl and simethicone.

When to consult a physician before using Imodium products:
(1) therapy in a child < 48 pounds (2 to 5 years)
(2) blood or mucus in stool
(3) fever
(4) history of liver disease
(5) pregnant
(6) breast feeding
(7) taking antibiotics
(8) diarrhea gets worse
(9) diarrhea lasts more than 2 days
When not to use Imodium products:
(1) history of rash or allergy to loperamide
(2) bloody or black stool
