Description

Donors weighing 110 pounds (50 kg) or more may donate the full 525 mL required for a routine donation (450 mL +/- 45 mL per unit + 30 mL for processing). If less than the regular amount is to be collected (due to low donor weight or other consideration), there is no need to reduce the amount of anticoagulant in the collection bag unless less than 300 mL is collected. If less than 300 mL is collected, then the amount of anticoagulant in the collection bag must be reduced.

It is essential that the volume of blood drawn is measured accurately.

volume of blood to draw in mL =

= approximately 12% of blood volume =

= ((donor's body weight in kg) / 50) * (450 mL) = A

amount of anticoagulant needed =

= (A / 100) * 14 = B

amount of anticoagulant to remove from a 450 mL collection bag =

= 63 - B
