Description

A domestic maid may be vulnerable to abuse by her employer or the employer's family.


 

Types of abuse may include:

(1) physical beating (with hand or foot, with object)

(2) intentional disfigurement

(3) emotional and psychological

(4) overwork and exhaustion

(5) neglect of physical needs (clothing, food, etc)

(6) neglect of health needs

(7) sexual assault

(8) economic (failure to pay a reasonable wage for labor)

 

Risk factors for the maid:

(1) immigrant

(2) present illegally or afraid of the police

(3) alone

(4) poor or belonging to an underclass

(5) limited intelligence

(6) unskilled and/or uneducated

(7) part-time or with no written contract

 

Risk factors in the employer or the employer's family:

(1) desire by the employer to instill fear and/or to obtain a certain type of behavior (manipulative)

(2) employer feeling above the law or untouchable

(3) employer believing that it is acceptable behavior to abuse the maid because of race, gender, religion or other reason
