Description

It is important to dispose of an outdated or used fentanyl transdermal patch in safe and responsible manner. These can pose a threat to anyone who handles the patch by accident or can be used for drug abuse.

Ways of disposal:

(1) incineration

(2) flush into the sewer

(3) place into a sealable biohazard container

The easiest way of disposing is to fold the patch in half so that the adhesive edges come into contact.

An alternative method is to cut the patch into pieces before disposal. This allows the gel to mix with water and eventually wash the drug away.

In general:

(1) Always wear gloves when handling a patch.

(2) If any of the gels come into direct skin or mucosal contact then immediately flush the area with running water.

(3) If the patch is cut, use sharp scissors and wash the scissors in water after use.

(4) Document the method of disposal so that a record exists.
