Description

A person with restrictions on opening or closing the mouth and jaws is at risk for a number of problems.


 

Problems associated with being unable to open the mouth:

(1) reduced intake of food and liquids, with risk of malnutrition

(2) chewing of solid foods, requiring a liquid or semi-liquid diet

(3) impaired speech

(4) daily dental hygiene and risk for periodontal disease

(5) dental care (cleaning, treatment of caries, etc)

(6) psychological (stigma, anger, depression, etc)
