Description

The Excited Delirium Syndrome (ExDS) must be distinguished from other disorders that may overlap with its clinical features.


 

The excited delirium syndrome may be associated with:

(1) psychostimulant intoxication (cocaine, methamphetamine, phencyclidine)

(2) psychiatric disorders, especially psychotic disorders

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) non-stimulant substance intoxication

(2) substance withdrawal

(3) serotonin syndrome

(4) heat stroke

(5) seizures

(6) infectious disease (sepsis, fever, etc)

(7) hypoxia

(8) electrolyte disturbances

(9) head injury

(10) neuroleptic malignant syndrome

(11) thyrotoxicosis
