Description

Traumatic injury to the diaphragm can be graded using the Diaphragm Injury Scale.

Type of Injury

Extent

Grade

hematoma or contusion

I

laceration

<= 2 cm

II

2 – 10 cm

III

> 10 cm with tissue loss <= 25 square cm

IV

laceration with tissue loss > 25 square cm

V

If there are bilateral injuries, then the final grade is increased by 1 up to Grade III.

where:

• In the original tables a laceration of 2 cm could be either Grade II or III. I've implemented it as Grade II, with > 2 cm as Grade III.

• I am assuming Grade II can be raised to Grade III but not Grade III to Grade IV.
