Description

Iino et al reported criteria for the diagnosis of eosinophilic otitis media. The authors are from Jichi Medical University in Omiya-ku, Japan.


 

Patient selection: otitis media with effusion

 

Major criteria:

(1) eosinophil-dominant effusion

 

Minor criteria:

(1) bronchial asthma

(2) resistance to conventional treatment for otitis media

(3) viscous middle ear effusion

(4) nasal polyposis

 

Additional findings:

(1) chronic rhinosinusitis

(2) bilateral disease

(3) granulation tissue formation

 

The diagnosis of eosinophilic otitis media was made if both of the following were present:

(1) the major criteria

(2) >= 2 of the minor criteria
