Description

Von Korff et al identified factors associated with work disability in patients with diabetes mellitus. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from interventions to avoid disability. The authors are from the University of Washington in Seattle, the Seattle Veteran’s Administration Health Services Research and Development Center and the Group Health Cooperative in Seattle.


 

Patient selection: diabetes mellitus

 

Outcomes: work disability, problems with work performance and unemployment

 

Predictors of disability:

(1) depression

(2) 2 or more diabetic symptoms experienced on a regular basis

(3) 3 or more diabetic complications

(4) significant comorbidities based on medications

(5) lower education (no college)

 

Diabetic symptoms:

(1) cold hands and feet

(2) pain in hands and feet

(3) numbness in hands and feet

(4) polyuria

(5) excessive hunger

(6) abnormal thirst

(7) shakiness

(8) blurred vision

(9) feeling faint

(10) fatigue

 

Diabetic complications include:

(1) retinopathy

(2) nephropathy

(3) neuropathy

(4) cerebrovascular disease

(5) cardiovascular disease

(6) peripheral vascular disease

(7) ketoacidosis
