Many things in the laboratory (specimens, forms, worksheets, policies, etc) have to be retained for a specific period of time, after which they can be thrown away ("pitched").
Durations of retention:
(1) hours
(2) days
(3) weeks
(4) months
(5) years
(6) forever
The pitch date can be determined by:
(1) prospectively adding the storage period to the receipt date to determine a "pitch date"
(2) retrospectively from a date by subtracting the storage period, allowing you to pitch anything with a receipt date before the cutoff date
Sometimes it is necessary to record how the material was disposed of.
