Description

A percent glucose solution may be infused at a rate to meet a specified target amount.

Molecular weight of glucose (anhydrous): 180.16 g

1 mmol glucose = 180.16 mg

NOTE: Most parenteral solutions are made from dextrose monohydrate and not the anhydrous form (see next section).

Rates of infusion:

(1) mg glucose per kg per hour

(2) mg glucose per hour

(3) mg glucose per kg per minute

(4) mg glucose per minute

(5) mmol glucose per kg per hour

(6) mmol glucose per hour

(7) mmol glucose per kg per minute

(8) mmol glucose per minute

Parameters:

(1) body weight in kilograms

(2) percent glucose solution

amount of glucose in a percent glucose solution =

= (10 * (percent as a whole number)) mg/mL

The rate of infusion is converted to mg glucose per minute.

glucose infusion rate in mL/min =

= (infusion in mg per min) / (glucose content in mg/mL)
