Description

Measurements of the calcaneus (heel bone) can be used to help determine the probable gender of human remains.

Patient population:

(1) 50 females and 82 males in the Tennessee Data Bank

(2) The subjects were Whites of European descent and Blacks.

Measurements taken:

(1) maximum length of calcaneus in mm

(2) middle breadth in mm

score =

= (0.28425 * (maximum length in mm)) + (0.28269 * (middle breadth in mm)) – 35.1968

Interpretation:

• A positive score indicates male gender.

• A negative score indicates female gender.

• A score = 0 would be indeterminate.

• The score is reported as 84% correct.
