Description

The 30th Session of the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Use (CCNFSDU) developed a definition for dietary fiber.

Features of dietary fiber - all of the following:

(1) carbohydrate polymer

(2) >= 10 monomeric units

(3) not hydrolyzed in the human small intestine after being consumed

(4) one of the following:

(4a) naturally occurring in food

(4b) derived from foodstuff using enzymatic, chemical or other process

(4c) synthetic

In theory dietary fiber should show a beneficial effect on health by some scientific metric. It would seem that some authors dispense with this requirement.
