Description

Keeling et al used a decision tree to classify a perinatal death using the modified Wigglesworth scheme. The authors are from John Radcliffe Maternity Hospital, University of Bristol, Hammersmith Hospital and Royal Hospital for Sick Children (Bristol) in England.

Patient selection: perinatal death (antepartum, intrapartum, neonatal)

Sequential Feature

Wigglesworth Group

lethal or potentially lethal malformation

2

specific condition (see below)

5

antepartum death

1

intrapartum death

4

neonatal and < 1,000 grams

3

neonatal, >= 1,000 grams, died at < 4 hours after delivery

4

neonatal, >= 1,000 grams, died at >= 4 hours after delivery, evidence of birth trauma or asphyxia

4

neonatal, >= 1,000 grams, died at >= 4 hours after delivery, < 37 weeks gestation

3

neonatal, >= 1,000 grams, died at >= 4 hours after delivery, >= 37 weeks gestation

Group

Features

1

death before start of labor, normally formed

lethal congenital malformations; 2 or more nonlethal malformations if caused death before the start of labor

3

conditions associated with preterm birth or immaturity

4

death during labor without malformations or specific conditions, including fresh stillbirths
