Description

A patient with schistosomiasis for several years may develop cutaneous lesions at sites where female worms have deposited eggs.


 

Common sites include:

(1) periumbilical region (associated with the paraumbilical veins)

(2) skin of thorax or abdomen

(3) anogenital region

 

Appearance:

(1) papules, which may be in groups and which are often pruritic

(2) plaques or nodules

(3) soft, warty vegetations

(4) polypoid growths

(5) ulcerations

 

Histologic features:

(1) granulomatous inflammation with eosinophils

(2) eggs may be present but these can be hard to find

(3) pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia of the overlying epidermis
