Cutraneous pili migrans (CPM) occurs when a hair becomes embedded in the skin. Sometimes the hair migrates and clinically may resemble cutaneous larva migrans.
Clinical features:
(1) a hair is embedded in the skin, often on the foot
(2) the hair may migrate slowly
(3) removal of the hair is curative
(4) exclusion of other diagnoses
Source of the hair:
(1) hair on the floor
(2) traumatic implantation
(3) ingrown hair
Differential diagnosis:
(1) dog hair (usually thicker and more brittle than human hair)
(2) natuiral or man-made fiber
(3) pilonidal cyst
