Description

Robson listed a number of physiological effects that may develop in a patient following critical care. It is important to recognize these in order to optimize rehabilitation. The authors are from Chesterfield & North Derbyshire Royal NHS Trust in England.


 

Patient selection: following discharge from the intensive care unit (ICU)

 

Physiological problems that may be encountered:

(1) disturbed sleep

(2) muscle weakness (myopathy)

(3) fatigue

(4) poor balance and/or gait disturbances

(5) peripheral neuropathy

(6) alopecia (probably Telogen Effluvium)

(7) skin rash/irritation

(8) pruritis/itching

 

Additional concerns:

(1) malnutrition with muscle wasting

(2) pressure ulcers

(3) tracheal complications of intubation

(4) altered bowel transit

(5) Clostrdium difficile or other hospital-acquired pathogens

(6) problems with medications
