Trauma to the spinal cord can result in transient, reversible injury analogous to concussion following head injury. Zwimfper and Bernstein listed criteria to diagnose this condition. The authors are from the University of Toronto in Canada.
Criteria for spinal cord concussion - all of the following:
(1) onset of neurological deficits following spinal trauma
(2) neurological deficits correspond to the level of the spinal cord involved
(3) complete neurological recovery occurs within 72 hours
(4) absence of delayed deterioration or permanent cord injury
Types of spinal trauma involved:
(1) sports injury
(2) fall injury
Most commonly affected spinal cord levels:
(1) cervical spine
(2) thoracolumbar junction
