Description

Talley et al give criteria for diagnosing patients with the Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). These seem to be modeled after the Manning criteria (see next section).


 

Criteria for the diagnosis of the Irritable Bowel Syndrome - both of the following:

(1) abdominal pain >= 6 times per year

(2) >= 2 of the following

(2a) pain that is relieved by defecation > 25% of the time

(2b) looser stools when pain began (often)

(2c) more frequent stools when pain began (often)

(2d) abdominal distension (often)

(2e) feeling of incomplete evacuation (often)

(2f) mucus per rectum
