Radiosurgery can be an effective method for treating a brain metastasis provided that the metastases meets certain criteria.

Radiosurgery should be considered if the brain metastasis has all or most of the following:

(1) maximum diameter < 4 cm.

(2) located at the junction between the gray and white matter.

(3) well-defined on CT or MRI scans.

(4) presence of an expansive, non-infiltrative margin.

(5) shape that is spherical and regular.

Additional factors impacting the decision:

(1) informed consent of the patient

(2) availability of a suitable radiation delivery unit

(3) a team of physicians experienced in the technique
