Criteria for an autoimmune disorder:

(1) The disease is associated with a precise autoantigen.

(2) The disease can be experimentally induced in animals by immunizing them against the autoantigen.

(3) Administration of the autoantibody or autoreactive T cells can induce the disorder in normal animals.

(4) The autoantibody or autoreactive T cells can be isolated from lesions.

(5) Disease activity correlates with the level of autoantibody or autoreactive T cells in the blood.

(6) The disorder is associated with other autoimmune disorders. (A person with the disorder is more likely to have one or more other autoimmune disorders.)
