Description

Pannek et al listed criteria for treatment success following therapy for benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). This can help identify patients who may require more aggressive management for relief of symptoms. The authors are from Ruhr-Universitat Bochum in Herne, Germany.

Criteria for treatment success:

(1) peak flow > 15 mL per second (uroflowmetry)

(2) residual urine < 100 mL

(3) absence of urine retention

(4) significant reduction from pretreatment symptom score

A significant reduction from the pretreatment score was:

(1) a reduction in score by > 50%

(2) a post-treatment score corresponding to no or mild symptoms (<= 7 for the AUA)
