Description

A premature infant is at risk for apnea. Mishra et al listed criteria for apnea of prematurity (AOP). The authors are from All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Narayana Hridalaya.

Criteria for AOP:

(1) premature infant (gestational age at birth < 34 weeks)

(2) onset of apnea within 7 days of delivery

(3) exclusion of other conditions that can cause apnea (sepsis, asphyxia, etc).

The diagnosis may be obscured or delayed if the infant is receiving ventilatory support.
