Description

Lieberman et al listed criteria for transfusion-associated dyspnea (TAD). This is largely a diagnosis of exclusion (dyspnea NOS). The authors are from University Health Network Toronto, University of Toronto, University of British Columbia, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center Toronto and the Canadian Blood Services Ottawa in Canada.

Criteria for a diagnosis of TAD:

(1) The patient experiences the new onset of respiratory distress and dyspnea.

(2) The onset is within 24 hours of a blood product transfusion.

(3) The patient does not meet criteria for transfusion-associated acute lung injury (TRALI), transfusion-associated cardiac overload (TACO) or an allergic reaction.

An additional criteria would be to exclude other causes of acute lung injury (ALI) or dyspnea unrelated to the blood product transfusion.
