Description

Garcia et al listed criteria for superinfection of an hydatid cyst by other micro-organisms. The authors are from Hospital Universitario de Salamanca and Hospital General de Segovia in Spain.


 

Requirement: aspiration or drainage of purulent material from an hydatid cyst

 

Criteria for definitive diagnosis of superinfection - one or both of the following:

(1) positive culture or other definitive evidence of a bacterial or fungal pathogen

(2) positive blood cultures

 

Criteria for a probable diagnosis - one of the following:

(1) clinical evidence of a systemic inflammatory response

(2) radiologic changes in the cyst indicative of infection
