Description

Chacon et al developed criteria for the therapeutic response seen in patients with splenic marginal zone lymphoma. The authors are from the Hospital Virgen de le Salud in Toledo, Spain.

Types of response:

(1) complete remission

(2) good clinical and hematological response

(3) partial remission (stable disease)

(4) progressive disease

Complete remission is the absence of any sign of disease, including bone marrow involvement.

Good clinical and hematological response

(1) no symptoms

(2) no cytopenia

(3) no lymph node involvement

(4) no disease in nonhematopoietic tissue (tissue other than bone marrow, lymph node, spleen or liver)

(5) lymphoma cells represent < 5% of cells or are a minor population in the peripheral blood and/or bone marrow

Partial remission (stable disease) involves anyone not classified as one of the other 3 types of responses.

Progressive disease - one or more of the following:

(1) presence of new symptoms

(2) development of disease in a new location

(3) increase >= 50% in blood lymphocyte count

(4) increase >= 50% in bone marrow infiltration

(5) increase in a previous organomegaly >= 25%

(6) transformation to a more aggressive type of malignant lymphoma
