Criteria for When to Use the AMA Criteria for Permanent and Stable Impairment of the Spine

The AMA criteria for spinal impairment are intended for patients with permanent and stable impairments of the spine.

The AMA criteria should not be used if:

(1) the impairment is resolving

(2) the impairment is changing

(3) the impairment is unstable

(4) the impairment is expected to change significantly within 12 months without medical therapy

(5) the impairment is expected to change significantly within 12 months with medical therapy
