The Japanese Society for Cancer of the Colon and Rectum (JSCCR) used criteria to diagnose sessile serrated adenoma/polyp (SSA/P) in a project entitle “Potential of Cancerization of Colorectal Serrated Lesions”.
Criteria for a sessile serated adenoma/polyp:
(1) serrated cryptal epithelium
(2) at least 2 of the following architectural abnormalities:
(2a) basal crypt dilation
(2b) irregulary branching cryps
(2c) horizontally arranged basal cryps (inverted L or T shaped crypts), running parallel the to muscularis mucosae
Additional features:
(1) sessile shape
(2) most often found in the right colon or appendix
(3) tend to be larger than a hyperplasitc polyp (7 to 15 mm vs 2 to 8 mm)
(4) cytologic dysplasia absent or minimal
