Description

The proper water storage vessel is a key element for providing safe water in a developing country. The ideal vessel should be inexpensive, simple to produce and made of safe materials.

Features of the ideal water storage vessel:

(1) made of a durable, lightweight material that does not oxidize or corrode

(2) holds a convenient volume of water (usually 20 liters or 5 gallons)

(3) has sturdy and comfortable handles for easy carrying

(4) has a single, narrow opening for filling with a tight fitting cover

(5) has a durable, nonrusting spigot

(6) all parts are cleanable

(7) has some way for air to enter the container as water is removed

(8) has a means of determining the volume of water within the container

(9) has an illustration of safe water handling practices on the outside of the container

(10) has a stable base

Small openings for filling and removing water are important to prevent contamination. However, the opening must be large enough so that all parts of the interior can be cleaned regularly.
