Description

Pseudohypokalemia may be reported when measured by an ion-sensitive electrode in a patient with greatly elevated blood lipids. The true potassium concentration can be estimated by adjusting for the hyperlipemia.

Parameters:

(1) measured potassium in mmol/L

(2) total lipid concentration in mmol/L (= total cholesterol in mmol/L + triglyceride in mmol/L)

(3) serum triglyceride in g/L (0.01 * mg/dL = g/L)

Method of Steffes and Freier:

corrected potassium =

= (measured potassium in mmol/L) + ((measured potassium) / 100 * ((0.21 * (triglycerides in g/L)) - 0.6))

Method of Dimeski et al:

corrected potassium =

= (measured potassium in mmol/L) + ((total lipids in mmol/L) * 0.004)
