Description

The activity of erythropoietin derived from humans was measured in 1965.

1 IU of the 1st International Reference Preparation = 1.48 mg

1 mg = 0.6756 IU (1st International Reference Preparation)

Facts about erythropoietin:

(1) The molecular weight for recombinant erythropoietin alfa is 30,400 daltons.

(2) The polypeptide has 165 amino acids.

(3) In vivo erythropoietin (as derived from human urine) is heavily glycosylated. Therefore the activity per mg for the 1st reference preparation would be less than for highly purified or recombinant erythropoietin.
