Description

In the United States many male newborns undergo circumcision, for a variety of reasons. This operation is elective and should be deferred in the presence of certain circumstances.

Reasons to not perform a neonatal circumcision:

(1) bleeding or hematologic disorder

(2) prematurity

(3) illness

(4) developmental defect for which the foreskin can be used in reconstruction (hypospadias, epispadias, megalourethra, web penis, chordee)

(5) incontinence due to neurological disease such as myelomeningocele, if the presence of a foreskin may make it easier to fit an external collecting device

(6) presence of active infection in the area

(7) lack of informed consent from parents
